M.M. Kalburgi, the former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, said that a few seers of the Lingayat community have snatched away the rights of the Budga Jangams resulting in the community remaining backward.
Prof. Kalburgi was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the State-level convention of Budga Jangams at the Karnatak Vidyavardhak Sangha here on Sunday. According to him, Budga and Beda Jangams were originally part and parcel of the Lingayat community. But seers certified them as Budga and Beda Jangams based on their occupation. However, this gradually resulted in the Budga Jangams losing their Lingayat identity and they were pushed to the corner, he said. Today, they are a minor community with an estimated population of 50,000 for whose welfare the governments have done little.
Budga Jangamas have played a major role in disseminating the rich traditional and culture of the nation. The State Government should launch welfare programmes for them, he said. Earlier, sangha Secretary Shankar Halghatthi said there was a need to protect the art of Budga Jangamas. People should raise their voices against the injustices meted out to the Budga Jangamas.
Karnataka Budga Jangama Welfare Union president Sheshappa Andollu presided over the inaugural session.
Folk artiste Burrakatha Iramma was honoured with Budga Ratna Award and poet S.G. Siddharamaiah with Budga Sri Award.
